Hi and thanks for choosing to connect to the Internet by using The Internet Group as your ISP, we hope you enjoy the experience. The instructions on this disk or CD have been written to get you and your computer connected to the Internet quickly and easily and assume you've already installed Mac OS 8.
Installing Mac OS 8 installs a web browser (Netscape) and an email program (Clairs Emailer). If you wish to use Microsoft Internet Explorer then the installer for this software can be found on the Mac OS 8 CD. Before being able to connect to us though, you will need to configure these programs with your login information.
If you've completed at least a standard installation of Mac OS 8, you should have a folder on your main HD called "Internet". Inside that folder will be an alias called "Internet Setup Assistant". If no such folder or alias exists then you will need to install the relevant software from the Mac OS 8 CD. Refer to the installation manual for instructions on how to do so. It is advisable to read the "Installing Mac OS 8" file on your CD before installing any operating system software. Also refer to the file "About Mac OS 8" on your CD for information about any known problems and incompatibilites that may exist with your particular computer.
If you do have an alias in your "Internet" folder called "Internet Setup Assistant" then please read the file "About Internet Access" located in the "Internet" folder. This file contains important information including step by step instructions on what to do if you have any special type of Internet connection or problem. For example, you may have TCP/IP configurations from a previous version of Mac OS that you wish to use under Mac OS 8; or you may wish to know how to change from a modem connection to a LAN connection.
If you need step by step instructions on how to use the "Internet Setup Assistant" to configure a basic modem connection to The Internet Group, please complete the following tasks :
1. Double click on the "Internet Setup Assistant" alias (found in the "Internet" folder) and read the onscreen instructions.
2. Click on "Update" then click the right arrow to continue.
3. When asked what type of configuration you'd like, select "Add Internet Configuration". Click the right arrow to continue.
4. Name your configuration "The Internet Group".
5. Ensure there is a black dot beside "Modem" and click the right arrow to continue.
6. Select your modem from the list. If your modem doesn't appear on the list then selecting "Apple Personal Modem" will usually install a driver compatible with your modem. If it doesn't then additional modems scripts can be installed (the extra scripts are in the CD Extras folder located on the CD that came with your Mac OS 8 software). The installer in that folder may contain a modem script for your particular modem. If you're unsure about what brand of modem you have then refer to the documentation that came with it. Unfortunately, in some cases the 'Apple Personal Modem' will not work with your modem (e.g. if you have an Ellcon modem). Please call us if you're unsure what to do in such a case.
7. Select which port your modem is connected to and whether you use tone or pulse dial (most exchanges accept tone dial).
8. Click the right arrow and fill in the required information. A list of phone numbers can be found on the access Information sheet that contains your login and password information. We recommend entering the supernumber (if one is available in your area). For example, people in Auckland would use 3038282 as their prefered number. If you have call waiting and wish to disable it, use #43#, if you're in Australia or *52, if you're in New Zealand. Note that it is important to include the comma as it tells the dialing software to pause before continuing with the rest of the number.
9. You should now be at section 6 of the Internet Setup Assistant. If you have purchased a static IP address from us then answer yes and follow the on-screen instructions to enter it.
10. Click the right arrow to continue.
11. Enter your DNS settings (refer to the access information sheet we gave you when you joined for these numbers). Enter the domain name as well. For example, if you dial into Auckland, the DNS addresses would be :
203.29.160.4
203.29.160.2
and the host name would be
ihug.co.nz
12. Click the right arrow to continue.
13. Enter your email address and password clicking the right arrow to continue.
14. Enter your pop account name. For example
elvis@pop.ihug.co.nz
15. Enter the email host name. People in New Zealand should enter smtp.ihug.co.nz and people in Australia should enter smtp.tig.com.au
16. Click the right arrow to continue.
17. Enter the name of your local news server. For example, if you dial into Auckland, enter
news.ihug.co.nz
18. Click the right arrow to continue.
19. IMPORTANT! Remove the tick beside "Connect when finished".
You should now be ready to make the modifications which you do by pressing the "Go Ahead" button.
To properly connect to us you must use a connection script. Such a script can be found on the floopy disk/CD that accompanied your installation manual. It is called "OTscript.txt".
Follow these step by step instructions to install the script:
1. Select "PPP" from the "Control Panels" folder.
2. Click on "Options" then on the "Protocol" tab.
3. Put a check beside "Use TCP header compression" and beside "Connect to a command-line host".
4. Click on "Use connect script" then click on "Import Script".
5. Select the file "OTscript.txt" from the CD or disk that we provided you with. You should now see the file name appear beside "Use connect script".
6. Press OK.
7. Close the PPP window and choose "Save".
Congratulations! You've now got all the connection software configured. Your browser and email program have also been partially configured. To complete their configuration you need to add some settings to a program called "Internet Config" and then personalise your copy of Claris Emailer.
Follow these step by step instructions to complete the configuration:
1. Double click on "Internet Config" (found in the "Internet | Internet Utilities | Internet Config" folder).
2. Click on "Personal". Enter your real name and organisation (if any). For example,

3. Close that window and click on "World Wide Web".
4. Enter your home page address. Australian customers should enter http://www.tig.com.au/ and New Zealand customers should enter http://www.ihug.co.nz/
5. Close that window and select "Quit" from the "File" menu.
6. Click on "Save" to keep the changes you've just made.
7. Double click on the "Claris Emailer Lite" alias (found in the "Internet" folder).
8. Enter your personal details then press "OK".
9. Select "Quit" from the "File" menu.
All settings have now been entered and the programs configured.
